DRT Mfg. Co was founded in 1949 by Ermal Fraze as The Dayton Reliable Tool Company. He was the company’s only employee initially. Fraze quickly developed customers spanning several markets, including making advanced precision parts and materials related to military efforts at nearby Wright Patterson Air Force Base. He patented his innovations, and later earned an engineering degree at the General Motors Institute (now Kettering University) in Flint, Michigan.
By 1959, the company’s clients included automotive manufacturing giants like General Electric, Ford, Chrysler, and the high precision demanding NASA. But, around that time, Fraze became most noted for developing and perfecting the “integral rivet technology” that transformed the can industry for beer and beverage packaging. This technology allowed cans to be opened by pulling a tab in the lid without using a separate can opening tool. He received U.S. patent No. 3,349,949 for his pull-top can design in 1963 and sold his invention to Alcoa.
According to many beverage industry sources, “by 1965, over seventy-five percent of beer brewers in the U.S. had adopted Fraze’s can.”
Always the leader in tooling innovation, in 1977, Fraze patented a major improvement to his original invention, the first push-in and fold-back tab. This tab remained attached to the can, and it is the principal design still used on canned beverages. By 1980, Dayton Reliable Tool Company changed its name to the Dayton Reliable Tool and Manufacturing Company, Inc. After Ermal Fraze died in 1989, his heirs sold the Dayton Reliable Tool and Manufacturing Company, Inc., to the business’s managers. The company is now named DRT Mfg. Co, a part of DRT Holdings, Inc.
